To all who laboured in the churchyard to tame the jungle at Rennington recently. Many hands make light work! (and not a few machines) and yours were appreciated. We also thank Ken Beattie for keeping the "in by" part of the churchyard neat all through the year. At Rock we have Bill Devonshire and Ian Sutherland to thank for keeping the churchyards tidy there.

World Ringing Record by Europa!
Our "challenge" was to ring Quarter Peals at the most Northerly, Easterly, Westerly and Southerly towers in England in the day. Our target time was 12 hours. Between towers we were to fly in my homebuilt Europa aircraft which took over 8 years to build, flying for the first time last July. As a ringer at Bamburgh and a professional aviator, to try and and combine both to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis seemed a good idea. This disease is, at present, without a cure. My 6 year old granddaughter suffers from CF as do many others.
Mark Philipson, my ringing colleague who would travel with me, arrived late on Friday. Sleep was difficult - had I forgotten anything? Will I wake to bad weather? Will all the ringers turn up? Will the plane be OK? The list seemed endless.
My morning started at 4.30am checking the computer for route weather. First stop Berwick where the Mayor, Liz Breckons, granddaughter Courtney and the local press photographer were arranged for 7.30am. All in order and ringing commenced at 7.44am. 49 minutes later the first quarter peal was over and Mark and I drove to Brunton where my Europa, G-BVLH, was sitting at the end of the runway. Gordon Beal, a fellow aviator, had done everything and a large crowd saw us off at 9.09am. A speedy journey to Beccles in Suffolk helped by tailwinds we arrived at 11.08am. At St. Margaret's in Lowestoft the tower was locked and we were 1 ringer short. Time for coffee and sandwich. The Vicar arrived with the last ringer and we were into our second quarter at 11.54am finishing 43 mins later. 2 down and 2 to go.
We were airborne again at 1.07pm. The weather deteriorated after St. Mawgan and it was with great relief I saw the flashing strobe at Lands End and we landed at 4.24pm.
We rang our 3rd quarter peal at Sennen and were then driven through Penzance and down to the lizard taking in a little more of the countryside than planned for our last quarter on the Southern tip of England at Landewednack. We finished the quickest QP I have ever rung in 36 mins at 7.52pm, setting a new record for someone else to try and beat of 12 hours and 8 minutes.
Both exhausted but overjoyed at completing our challenge, we still managed to find some energy to raise our arms a few times more, this time holding some well earned pints at the Top Inn, Lizard.
My grateful thanks to all who have sponsored the event so far and if anyone else would like to contribute please contact me at 4 Grange Park, Rennington, NE66 3QZ. Over £4000 has been raised so far and it's still rising.

David Barraclough.
